Time vs. Distance

Running is about two things: time and distance. Say a person runs really fast to cover a lot of distance, they can only keep that pace for a short amount of time. The same is true the if a person runs for a long time, they are not going to cover a huge distance because they have to go slower. So there has be a balance between time and distance.

The same thing is true with our relationships with God and other people. So if they spend a lot of time together, they may get closer in a short period of time, but how long is that closeness or spiritual high going to last? Looking at it from the other way, if they don't spend much time together over a long period of time, how close are they going to be? Relationships are like a marathon or ultra marathon (26.2 miles and longer), not a sprint. A person can not run that distance in minutes but in hours. They take dedication, persistence, and training. The more you run, the faster and better you get at it. So it is that the more time people spend with others, the closer they become.

That is a neat analogy. :)
Another parallel between running and relationships is this. The more time a runner spends preparing and training, the more he will be prepared for the marathon. The time-intensive training makes the marathon a lot easier than if he just did a crash course training for two weeks....
Part of the preparation is also planning and preparing for the 'what ifs' and unexpected surprises.
The longer we train and prepare the better equipped we are to love purely as Christ loves no matter what happens during the 'marathon.'
Also, the more we train the more we know who we are and what type of run we are capable of embarking on...
thanks for sharing this analogy.
